I hope you all have had the opportunity to enjoy the Hunger Games movies. With Mockingjay Part 1 having come out recently, I wanted to talk a little bit about all of the architecture that is being portrayed in these films. After all, I am one that goes to the movies and pays more attention to set design and art direction than I do anything else. Although, I have to admit I have seen Part 1 twice; the first time I watched it for entertainment value and the second time I was just engrossed in the backdrop that is the somewhat depressing dystopian setting of ‘District 13.’ The style of architecture that is seen in this film is also quite similar to the setting of Divergent and soon to come, Insurgent.

This week I had the pleasure of listening to an internationally acclaimed furniture designer speak on his life, and design, and his dreams. Giulio Cappellini opened with a statement regarding following your dreams and it really got me thinking. This overly animated Italian man spoke with such passion, gusto, and speed that his statement was difficult to capture, but it went something like this:

As a designer there is nothing I love more than planning the kitchen or bath of your dreams, but the reality is that I also believe deeply in sustainability and DEMO = WASTE. However, there are some things we can do together to create a more environmentally friendly remodel, and it could help your local community!

So, I talk about VOC’s an awful lot. Mostly about how horrible they are and how you should avoid them at all costs! But what are they? Why are they bad? And how can you avoid them?
